7.6.10

Have you ever had a person in your life that tries to control what you do and who you are? I have. It was great **insert sarcasm here**. But good news to all those who have felt that way: THERE’S A SONG FOR THAT!! (There’s a song for everything nowadays and thank goodness because how else are we to survive this crazy world? J). Anyway, the song is called, “King of Anything” by Sara Bareilles. This song definitely has a unique beat. It’s base is piano, which almost gives it a “coffee shop” feel, but then the beat picks up with a little drums, a horn (please don’t ask what kind as I am not familiar with the horn family), and even a little hand clapping in the chorus. When all four are going at the same time, it’s so good. I can’t even describe it. And it’s absolutely perfect for Sara’s voice. Another thing I like about this song is that it’s one of those songs that you twirl around and dance to because of how realistic it is. (Yes, I did just spend about 15 minutes doing that in my room). I love how this song can relate to pretty much everyone. For me, this reminds me of a friend. For someone else, it could be a boyfriend 9or someone related to them. This lyric was my favorite: “So, you dare tell me who to be, who died and made you king of anything.” It’s like you’re standing up to the person who treats you poorly and challenging them. Like taking your own and not letting anyone else step on you anymore. Believe me, it’s a feeling to be relished.

4.3.10

This blog isn’t really about just one song.

It’s more about a band: Muse, an edgy, British rock/alternative trio.

The 3 geniuses behind the songs: Matthew Bellamy, Christopher Wolstenholme, and Dominic Howard

From: Teignmouth, Devon, England.

songs: “Supermassive Black Hole”

You’ve probably heard “Supermassive Black Hole” in Twilight during the baseball scene. This song has such great energy and it sounds like it would be great music to blast for someone walking in, in really slow motion (you know the whole hair-  blowing-slow-walking-eyes-ahead-I’m-way-cooler-than-you thing). The guitar riffs really make the song, too.

            “Starlight”

Another awesome song is “Starlight”. According to Mr. Wolstenholme, the song is about missing someone. And according to Mr. Bellamy, the beginning of the song was written on a boat. If you listen to the song and/or watch the music video, you’ll definitely see where they get that.

            “Uprising”

“Uprising” is on their new CD called “Resistance”. This song contains the band’s classic edginess, but it has a new twist to it. It almost has an eeriness to it, but it’s one that makes you feel more anxiety than anything else. This song, like all of their songs, has a brilliant guitar riff and drum beat, but it’s the notes more than anything else that really put the song together. You can really hear them go up and down, almost like those arcade games that light up if you win.

My friend showed me this next song. It’s called It’s Only Life by Kate Voegele. In addition to singing, Kate has been on One Tree Hill as an actress. Her songs have been featured on One Tree Hill, Clubhouse, Ghost Whisperer, Newport Harbor, in the Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 2 trailers, and in Custody, a Lifetime Original movie. She is signed with Interscope records. The genre of her music is pop, rock, and fol pop. It’s Only Life is definitely more of a pop song, but the beginning is this sweet, soft piano and then an electric guitar and drums join it. But they don’t take away from the softness of the song. It’s Only Life is about understanding that sometimes we need to let go of things because in the big picture they’re really not all that important. Also that we shouldn’t give up because something bad happens, but that we should pick ourselves back up and continue on. One of the lines from the song is “The end of world, it seems” but doesn’t it though? Sometimes there really are things that happen and it seems like the world is coming to an end. But we always get through it, don’t we? In my opinion, God is the one who gets us through the bad times because sometimes whatever happens is just too much for us to handle. I also like this song because it says that we shouldn’t make a big deal out of the little, dumb things that happen. It’s nothing to worry about compared to the bigger picture.

"Fireflies"

I keep hearing this song on the radio. I finally looked it up and now I can’t stop listening to it! It’s called Fireflies by Owl City. Owl City is sythnpop and alternative band consisting of one man named Adam Young. Fireflies talks a bit about his insomnia. In parts of the song he says, “I’d rather stay awake when I’m asleep” And “ ‘Cause I feel like such an insomniac”. Adam’s voice is amazing too and I like that I can understand the words he says. I really like this song though because it doesn’t talk about relationships or love or anything. It’s just a really sweet song. One of my favorite lyrics from the song is “I’d like to make myself believe, that planet Earth turns slowly”. Wouldn’t we all? I always wish I had more time to do things. Everything is so overwhelming now these days and sometimes we forget to appreciate the little things in life like fireflies. My other favorite lyric is “ ‘Cause everything is never as it seems”. I know this sounds like a total cliché, but it’s honestly true. You can’t judge a book by its cover. You’ve got to read it first. I also really like the beat of the song. It’s a little bit of techno mixed with crystal clear piano mixed with electric guitar.

"Drops of Jupiter"

“Drops of Jupiter” is an amazing song. It’s by a band called Train. Train started in San Francisco, California and has won a Grammy Award. The band members are: Patrick Monahan, Scott Underwood, and Jimmy Stafford. Patrick Monahan wrote the song about his late mother. Some of the first lines came to him in a dream. This song is so brilliant because Patrick has such an awesome voice that mixes so well with the piano. There’s also some string instruments like violins and cellos in the background and an acoustic guitar. It somewhat sounds like an orchestra. The lines “Can you imagine no love, pride, deep-fried chicken, Your best friend always sticking up for you, Even when I know you’re wrong?” is cool because I can’t really imagine life without those things (except maybe the deep-fried chicken). I definitely recommend buying this song on iTunes.

This song is for those of you who know of or have heard of the movie Sixteen Candles, starring Molly Ringwald, or the song “Touch Me” by Samantha Fox. The song is called, “A Little Less Sixteen Candles, A Little More ‘Touch Me’ by Fall Out Boy. The song was originally going to be named “A Little Less Molly Ringwald, A Little More Samantha Fox”.

And for those of you who are still living under that rock, Fall Out Boy is rock band from Wilmette, Illinois. The members of the band are: Patrick Stump, Joe Trohman, Pete Wentz, and Andy Hurley. This song was released on their album From Under A Cork Tree, which has sold over 2.5 million copies in the US. This is song has such cool lyrics. Like “I set my clocks early ‘cause I know I’m always late”. I think that line’s really cool because that’s what I do in my dad’s car. Another cool line is “’Cause you’re just the girl all the boys want to dance with, And I’m just the boy who’s had too many chances”. The beat to this song is also really good. It makes me want to pick up my guitar and play it.

9.8.09

I was looking around on YouTube and I came across this really cool video. It’s called “Here We Go Again” by OK Go. You may also know it as “The Treadmill Video”. The band OK Go formed in Chicago in 1998. The members consisted of Damian Kulash, Tim Nordwind, Dan Konopka, and Andy Duncan. Andy Duncan left the band in 2005 and was replaced by Andy Ross. The band now lives in Los Angeles. The music video for this song won the 2007 Grammy Award for Best Short Form Music Video and the 2006 YouTube Award for Most Creative Video. It is the band’s only song on the Billboard Hot 100, which is likely due to the music video having over 47 million views on YouTube. This song has a great beat that makes you want to jump around. The chorus gets stuck in my head J “Oh, here it goes again, I shoulda known, shoulda known, shoulda known again” This song was featured in commercials for Nike+iPod, Cingular Wireless, College Road TripShrek the ThirdThe Heartbreak Kid, and in an advertisement for the TV show, The Big Bang Theory. It is also featured in the video games: Rock Band, Thrillville: Off The Rails, SSX on Tour, and in the Arcade and Playstation 2 versions of Dance, Dance, Revolution. It is parodied on the TV shows The Simpsons andFoster’s Home For Imaginary Friends. If you get a chance, check out the music video on YouTube and you can visit the band’s website at www.okgo.net.

Hey everyone. I’m MG, music expert. I live, eat, and breathe music. All the time, everywhere. This blog is all about the latest, greatest, and sometimes the under-the-radar music that you HAVE to listen to.

One song that I’ve been hearing a lot is called Use Somebody by Kings of Leon. The band’s lead singer said that the song is about being far away from home. It’s an awesome song and it has a really good beat. Kings of Leon is made up of three brothers (Caleb, Nathan, and Jared) and their cousin Matthew. They started their band in Nashville, TN and named it in honor of their father. The 2nd song is so beautiful. It’s called Hero by Enrique Iglesias.  Enrique was born in Spain and moved to the Miami, Florida in 1985. His father is the famous Spanish singer, Julio Iglesias. The 3rd song is Wrong Again by Nick Jonas. This song is about Nick’s relationship with God. It was on Nick’s solo, self-titled album. For those of you who live under a rock, Nick Jonas is in a band with his two brothers (Kevin and Joe) called Jonas Brothers. They were raised in Wyckoff, New Jersey. They have a TV show on Disney Channel called JONAS.
